Last night an aged former truckdriver told me he used to put HEET in his diesel fuel. The label says do not add to diesel. I don't use my tractor much in winter unless we get a big snow...north Missouri negligble amounts so far. I added fuel supplement from Orscheln last tank, and Marvel Mystery tank before....wondering if the old guy just has a 'bad cluster' in his memory?

Thanks fellas for all your comments. When you don't have experience/ and I don't have much with a diesel/ its just great that there is a place like this to go.

Your old truck drive said one thing and you heard another. Heet makes both auto and diesel versions - use the diesel version for diesel engines only. Hundreds of additives and many very good ones like Marvel.

I'm with the G-Man. Have used the Deere stuff for years in my construction equipment as they are used everyday with the added benefit of increasing the cetane rating....

Up here in the cold belt, the diesel suppliers usually blend the fuel to work in lowest anticipated temperatures, as long as we don't have a real thermometer buster, it is usually OK. Problem is to keep your diesel fresh with current supply. A trick that some use if they're not trusting of the supply, is to add some kerosene to their diesel - I mixed about 1/4 kerosene in my last tank, anticipating these real low temperatures, of zero and below. As far as removing moisture from your fuel, you can use most any anti-gasline freeze product - methanol or isopropanol. 8ounces in a tankful should not be a problem to the equipment. I rarely use the stuff - filters should remove water prior to getting into engine. I have rarely found any amount of water in my diesel filters.

Bus driver and G-man are correct use only ISOPROPYL alcohol in diesel fuel

Personally, I would not put methanol into any system unless the manufacturer of that equipment specifies the use of methanol. The stuff can be very corrosive to some metals. Additives that are pure isopropyl are OK for adding to any fuel. Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl, but already has added to it about all the water that it can handle, so rubbing alcohol would not be good for a fuel system. Read the labels carefully.

Personally, I wouldn't put Heet or any product like it in any fuel system. Most of that stuff contains methanol, which is pretty hard on your fuel system. Stanadyne makes an excellent fuel conditioner/anti-gel product. I believe Deere sell the Stanadyne stuff under the Deere name.

I've heard of truckers using everything from a gallon of Reg. No-Lead per 100 gal. of straight #2 fuel to waste oil, or stuff called Power Service, etc. in diesel to keep it flowing in the cold. They make a special HEET for diesel I think. I wouldn't put it in is it said not to. I burn a blended fuel that's either a 60-40 or 50-50 mix of #1 & #2 fuel and when it gets really cold, around Zero I put Power Service in as well.

I don't have the manual for the skid steer's Yanmar but if I recall correctly thay called for mixing 10 to 20% gasoline with the diesel depending on how cold the temp. Sounds like alot. Maybe better to stick with fresh #1 diesel and some cetane booster.
