I am very new to restoring tractors and have been working on putting a 1936 B back to like new condition.

Getting information on this restoration has been hard sledding. I have JD parts catalogue, the JD owner/service booklet on unstyled B's, and a book by Yost - "How to restore your JD 2 cylinder Tractor", but there are big holes in the information. Is there a regular service manual for the unstyled B's? Do most people learn by trial and error and/or picking the brains of people who have restored tractors before and write to this website?

Some of the information I need is as follows: 1) Torque on engine head bolts? 2) Why will the governor case only lift up 1 inch off the engine case and then stop? 3) How to replace seals and bearings on the fan shaft? 4) How to replace steering pedestal cones, rollers, and felt seals? 5) How do you replace axle felt, cones, and rollers? 6) What is involved in replacing gasket on the reduction gear cover? 7) Any information at all on restoring the power lift.

Any help for this rookie will be greatly appreciated.

Tom

Tom, I have a 38 B Long Frame that got accepted for a recent Expo, so I know a little about them and will bump a few questions and let other more knowledgeable persons help you further. Im more of an electrical man, but those tractors dont have much need of that.

2) Have you removed the lower oil line off the bottom of the governor ??? You get at it by removing the crank case top cover. It HAS to be removed to remove the governor. If the governor weights or pins are worn, I sure would replace them, and those gears are on a press fit.

3) If you remove the fan shaft to get at the end bearings, theres an O Ring seal which seals the outer tube to the governor flange. The fan shaft/governor bevel gears are set for mesh, heel, and backlash by adding or removing the shim gaskets BOTH under the governor mount flange and the big end bearign cap on the bevel gear end. Thats a critical fit, so as to avoid whine and gear noise. The bevel gears are a matched set.

5) To replace those axle seals, its done from the INSIDE, inside the big bull gears and is a big job which I have blocked out of my mind lol.

6) I replaced my reduction gear cover and there were a couple dowell pins which sure help lining things up and it wasnt a bad job. There are a couple bearigns I would replace if I were in there and I think I added some oil back in when finished.

7) I had no power lift but have an extra one on anotehr 37 B I have.

Sorry this is all I have for you, but Im getting awful forgetful as to what I did after a year or two passes. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff

as john t said its a big job to replace felts cones and rollers read the book do you have a dial indicator you will need one as for the cones check them out you might not need to replace them if you do you will need a puller to get them out the inside ones are tough and dont forget the oil seals ed b

Roy, The service manual for the Model B (SM-2004)covers the styled series only(SN #60000 and up), many items are similar but not all are the same. The 4sp transmission (unstyled thru '39-40 which are basically the same are not covered in SM2004. the unstyled engine is smaller and has different parts. There is an unstyled directive(cannot find mine right know for the number)that is kind of an operators-service manual that has some usefull information, contact JOHN DEERE publications at 800-522-7448. gwh
