There is alot of diffrences between an L and an la. All L's had 22" rear wheels, and LA's 24" rim that bolts on to a castiron center. L's used a spacer behind the rear wheels, LA's didn't. L's all had 3/8" wall tube for the frame, LA's had 7/8" wall tube or solid bar. L's could have either a hercules engine (1938-41) or the john deere engine (L-4100T block casting number)(1942-1946) but all were 3 1/4 bore. the LA only had the john deere engine with a 3 1/2" bore (L-4210-T)block casting number). the draw bar was longer and lower on the LA to compensate for the tire size. all of the john deere engine L's and LA's had the air cleaner on outside of the hood on the right hand side, the hercules L's had the air cleaner on the inside of the hood unless it was fitted with the high stack which would be mounted on the left side of the hood. the L fenders rolled out over the tires, but the LA's almost go straight up (slight curve at the top). only 38-39 L's had the Spicer flat top trans. all the rest L's. LA's and LI's had the john deere side shift trans. 1941 and up, the trans will be stamped on the top of the mounting flange (L,LA,or LI) they all had diffrent gears. that is the basic diffrences I hope this will help. as far as finding out the year I could narrow it down close. if it is an LA, check the gas tank an see if it has a big X across the bottom. if it does, it is a 41. measure the size of the front spindles, if they are 1 1/8 it would be a 1941-44. if they are 1 3/8 it will be a 1945-46. go to the rear of the tractor and look at the rear housing. look to the far left where the fender mounts, in the corner if there is a letter L cast in the corner it is a 46. if it is an L, with the hercules engine, see if it has the top shift thans. (1938-39) if it has the john deere sideshift trans, it would be a late 39, but most likely a 1940 or 41. if it is a john deere engine L, check the spindles, the same applys to the L as did the LA except they didn't make a john deere engine L until 1942. the little letter L an the rear end also applys to the L Finding out the serial number will be impossible through the John Deere archives, the only hope you have is to find a tag off an old chassis that would be correct for your tractor, or when you figure out about what year and what model you have, call some parts dealers and see if they have a serial tag off a parts tractor, if you are comfortable with tag swapping. a restored L or LA without a tag will usually bring about $1000 less than one with a tag. and if you just want one for looks, I have repo tags, that we could stamp with xoxoxo, the year or anything you want as long as it isn't a serial number.
