I have a 1980 JD317 which I use to mow about 4 ac.. Until yesterday all was well. As I tried to cut in the PTO for the mower today; NOTHING. Has anyone had this problem before? I have been having some trouble with the ignition switch, does the PTO run through it? Any suggestions would be of great help.

I have a JD 317 that experienced the same problem. I thought it was the switch (because you had to play with the PTO switch if the ignition didn't want to work) so I replaced it. Still would not work. Finally I decided I should check the electrical clutch. I can't remember exactly what I checked for, but the readings from my digital VOM lead me to believe that the clutch was shot. I bought a new one (wasn't cheap...don't recall the cost) and put it in. Solved the problem.

Sadly I had one of those old 17 hp Kolhers and blew a hole in the engine a year later. It is sitting now until I have time to put a newer (pressurized lubrication) motor in it (1500USD). Got a good deal on a JD 445 to replace it...although the old 317 still handles tall grass better...that is why I want to get it going again and it was worth more to me than what I could get on trade.

I used to have trouble with the switch on my 111 after the mower was heated up. Problem seemed to disappear when I adjusted the electrical clutch clearance to 0.013in (?) and cleaned it out. Haven't used it much since then

Ok..A john deere 317--deos that have a 17 horse Kohler engine in it?? I had a International Cub Cadet with that engine and had the same problem. How warm was it when you where cutting. I know on our if it was to hot you had to wait for it to cool down. This just started happening last year( then we bought a 60" zero turn. ) Also i know if the blades didn't engage we would go backwards and then forward real quick and then they engage. Sounds stupid but ..hey it worked. Last year we started having lots of little problems like that....i suggest you invest in a zero turn. you'll love it and cut your time by 50%
