Hi guys:

Will a turbocharger and intake manifold off of a 4430 bolt up to a John Deere 4010 Diesel? I'm just curious about more power options for one and especially turbocharging. Are there any aftermarket turbo kits available anymore? I had heard that the M&W company had gone out of business.

Thanks for the input,

John

Pardon my asking, but WHY is it necessary to hop up a 4010? Are you building a "Puller"? If not, I would think that it would be cheaper and a whole lot easier to trade up the stock 4010 (worth what $6500-7500) for a 4520 which can be had for less than $8000 at dealerships (I can supply the name and location of such a JD Dealer, 26 miles away from me right now selling a 4520, CAH, DV, 1969 for $7900 or so)(In SE Iowa)

Of course if you are "Pulling", your reason becomes more obvious although I would think that a 4020 would be more desireable. Turboing it will certainly restrict the number of classes you can pull in. It sort of knocks you right out of "STOCK" doesn't it??

4430 parts will bolt on but you do not have enough under hood clearance for the exhaust manifold and turbo , you have to make some pipes to connect the intake . M&W kits are no longer available , also parts aren't , just talked to someone recently that tried to get some piping and it wasn't available . Sometimes you can find used kits at sales or advertised , there was one at an auction couple weeks ago but I couldn't get there that day . I have a 4430 intake on my 4020 but I use a M&W exhaust manifold , didn't want to cut a hole in the old hood .

All parts may not be readily available, but I just replaced the turbo on my 4020 after 4300 hours of service.(tractore and engine has over 8300 hours) Shoup Manufacturing Kankakee Ill. got all the parts I needed within 5 business days. These guys are really knowlageble and can help with most of the parts you might need. I do believe the 95 original horses to the 118 it dynoes now give a little more kick in the ### and the throttle response is amazingly different. Don't be afraid of the Turbo if you want one!

My dad is trying to locate parts for his 4010 turbo. Would you mind sharing the company name or a contact? Thanks!

Shoot, I forgot about that. I meant to say the exhaust manifold, not the intake. Will a 4430 intake flow a lot more air than stock intake on a 4010? What are some other good power upgrades you can do if you leave the engine naturally aspirated?

Thanks,

John

With a 4430 intake you have a lot less bends in the piping , it dumps on top right in the middle ,then goes equal distance front to rear whereas the 4010-20 goes to ,the front , down then all the way back and up again . It is a long ways from where it enters the manifold to the #6 cylinder . I think that makes a difference .
4010 originally had a .310 pump on it , no timing advance , some were changed to the .330 head with advance like the 4020 has do you know which you have ? The .330 head with a 7-2 leaf spring , no shims behind it and using a "smoke screw" to control the fuel output will get you a honest 100-05hp . With setting like that you'll get some smoke but not a lot . There was a quote on here some time ago saying you could get 130hp fron a nat. asp. 4020 , don't believe it , it can't be done with stock head . I think the big injectors like on your 4010 are the best , also my 64 4020 has the same style , just my opinion though . That's about all I know of that you can do to a naturally aspirated 4010-20 .

JD70Jim:

I don't care if you guys are inquisitive :) I don't have a tractor yet but would like to eventually have a New Generation tractor. I was just curious about available power options. I'd like to have one to look good and do some pulling with. I like diesels and know that you can pretty good power gains out of them if done right. My boss has a 3020 with a M&W kit and it runs good, it does a lot of work. 3010, 3020, 4010, 4020, and 4320 are very neat/pretty tractors and are not overly large with most options. There's my reasoning, for a little more power to put to use and to have something nice that could be used for everyday work or a full night at the track.

John , I didn't know what you had in mind , so here's a couple ideas . The turbo setup I described above will get you 140-50hp if every thing else is in GOOD SHAPE . I have a .370 head from an Allis Industrual application , use the stock Bendix injectors " the big ones like 4010 and early 4020 "1964" only , M&W turbo exhaust manifold , 4430 intake , the turbo kit I bought used and the turbo that came with it is very similar to an IH 1256 that's what I'm still using . I have seen 220hp on an A&W dyno and that's no bull . I run it at 120hp and open it up when I go pulling . Mine is a '64 Powershift . There are a few more details to go into and I will tell you about them if you want more info I've got nothing to hide , just trying to help . I have gotten some bad info over the years and I don't want anybody to go through that .
By the way do you know what hp that 3020 turbo has ? I acquired a turbo for a 3020 recently and am going to put it on mine when things slacken up around here .

What are the exhaust temps at various power levels? Any coolant or oil overheating? What are the exhaust & intake manifold pressures? Sounds like the improved 30 series manifold is one of your keys to success. Have you experimented with intercooling or water injection?

I run that hi hp only when pulling . As far as ex temp I could never get a pyromoter to read right , I took it off a few years ago , but when on a good pull it will run 30psi boost . I have never used water inj or aftercooled . At 120hp it runs good , no overheat etc . I have the M&W pan and fan on it .
I have a Schwitzer 3LD 279 turbo and also have a 4640 camshaft in the old girl . I don't use the tractor for much heavy work anymore , it is basically a chore tractor , mowing , grinding feed , spreading manure etc and OF COURSE pulling some , not as much as before because there isn't much stock pulling around here . They went to clubs etc and all run 500+ci Red ones and a couple Green . I'm too cheap to build one I guess .
