Update, gear reduction starter fit

I ended up ordering a gear reduction
starter online for a 3020. It was under
$100, shipping and all. It works really
well, really spins the engine over. I've
never had the tractor start so well. The
tractor thanked me by blowing a hydraulic
hose ten minutes later...

Thanks for the update
Nobody ever installed a starter with too many Kw of power on a Diesel engine.

Would you post a make/part number for the next guy?

Did it fit under the intake manifold, or turned to the side?

Photo?

Sure. I ordered it from Walmart,
strangely enough. I didn't have to modify
it at all. The only thing that I don't
like, is it sounds weird. It doesn't
sound like a 60's American tractor
starting anymore. I can get used to that.

The weird sound is just the gear reduction part of the starter. You'll get used to it. I put one on a similar tractor. Best money ever spent. Spins it over fast and starts quickly. It was a hard starter for many years. Now it fires right up every time

Put one like that on a 3010 for a farmer, 6 months later he calls and says tractor won't start and can't pull start it. Nose cone broke off and wedged in the clutch housing.

Thanks for posting Morgan and best of luck to you. Stick a reminder in your phone to post back here after about 300 starts. Its just hard to believe at that price you will get much mileage from that starter.

Certainly looks & fits good. Durability will be the real question.

Years ago the company I worked for chose to replace the factory equipped 42MT starters, when they failed, with Mitsubishi gear reduction units. To start with all of us liked the proposition as installation was a lot easier with the lighter, more compact starter. The company also liked it because they were cheaper.

6 months and later down the road when the starters began to fail the 42MTs started looking good again.

Hopefully this unit is different.....

Had the same experience with a 3020 only mine happened when starting and the broke off end ate the teeth off the ring gear. The only positive part was the tractor needed a clutch anyway but not right that day.LOL Tom

While I have a few JD two bangers, my yard tractor for years has been a 405 Belarus. One day in the middle of snow blowing season, the starter crapped out. Stock replacement was nearly $500 but I saw the gear reduction for about $100. I decided to take a chance and boy am I ever glad I did. Not only did it bolt right up but being smaller, it was far easier to install. The 405 was a good starter in the cold, but it had to crank for a while to get going, but with the gear reduction starter, it spun over way faster and fired up right away. One of the best decisions I ever made.

The sound of them reminds me of an early 1970s Chrysler.

Two types of these gear reduction starters.
#1 The more efficient Permanent Magnet PM gear reduction.
#2 The conventional series motor with gear reduction.

I?m have one on a 3020 and that thing was so hard to start
before new injectors I melted the stud that goes from the
solenoid to the starter motor tore the starter apart put in a new
stud and new insulation washers and it?s still going strong 2
years later . I can?t wait to get rid of this 42mt pos on my 4020
the only problem is I paid 430$ for it so I hate to just junk it
and I hate to pawn it off on some other poor slob wish I could
find someone willing to pay 150$ for it

While cranking what is the voltage measured between the stud on the starter that battery cable connects to and the starters cast iron body .
Suspect there is something damaged inside the 42MT as they are rated for 7.2Kw on 12V . Or the electrical system has VD .
Iskra makes some powerful generic starters .
