things to lookover 4320 Deere

I addition to all the usual stuff others will tell you, take the plate off under the clutch housing and look for oil that's leaked from the PTO apply "pistons", the transmission input shaft seals, or then engine rear main seal.

Note if there's lots of filings from the PTO clutch apply fingers and the foot clutch release fingers.

Also, look at the slot in the lower part of clutch pedal to see if it's getting near the end of it's adjustment range.

I addition to what BOB said, look at the brake pedals for wear, clutch pedal for wear, axle pivot pin wear, shift linkage for slop,or grinding when shifting. Try to be there when it is started cold to see how it starts. Remember they were the "Big Horse" on alot of mid sized farms in the day,and many were turned up and used for heavy tillage and chopper work. Good clean actual low houred ones are few and far between.

Thanks for the tips. What would the original make of tires be on it? What would be a good price for a good tractor? He's asking $7500 for it.

In my area, North-East Iowa, $7500 buys you a junk JD 4320. Good running ones will usually break $10K here.

I looked up parts on the pto but I dont know what you mean by "pistons". It looks like a double clutch tractor.

Pistons referred to as dowel pins(key 21) in parts catalog is what Bob was referring to.

Key # 21, there's 2 of 'em. #'s 22 and 23 are the seal (O-ring) and backup ring.

The force the T.O. bearing forward to apply the PTO clutch.

Look about a foot above the rear PTO shaft and to the left. If the PTO is dual speed, there should be a 540 shaft stored in the transmission housing. The shafts swap out with a snap ring and some transmission fluid loss.

4320 are one of my favorite tractors. When I buy one the overall condition is easily determined by the wear points. Your question as to what tires came original would mean the tractor has less than 3500 hours which would be low. They came with several different sizes of tires but 18.4x38 would be first choice for height and speed. If it hasn't been painted you can usually tell if any engine work has been done. The brake linings have been known to come apart but generally they could have 10K hours. Not trying to discourage you but $7500 wouldnt be a very nice one in my area.I have had at least 25 of them and just sold the nicest one I have ever had or seen for $25K.I would rather have one I can use and I just sold a nice original 7300hour with new rubber and it ran excellent for $17K and the buyer said he had looked at at least 10 and this was the one he liked.A picture would help. Good Luck. I hope its a good one at a cheap price.

I checked it out today, says it has 53 hours on it. I forgot to check the pressure at the scv. It runs out good and shifts good though needs a little slack taken out of the shifter mechanism. I dont know which way on that clutch pedal slot is best, top or bottom? Factory cab that is in very good shape for its age. Tell me what you think. I dont know how those double images got in there.

Well it has had a pretty cruddy paint job done on it. Everything painted green. LOL That is an after market cab. It looks like a Hiniker cab to me. Does he have all the doors and windows for the cab????

I would really look long and hard at this tractor. Someone has covered up anything that would have told you its condition with a crappy paint job. So it could be a good buy but it could also be a money pit too.

I would try and get someone local that knows JD tractors, to look at it with you. Trying to tell you what to look for would take pages of forum posts. Even then us not seeing it in person makes it a guessing game.

Picture helps! Missing 3rd link $200 replace cab with good flattop correct fenders $750+ does have decent Firestone tires , seat needs replaced, appears to have 30/40 series battery boxes, poor paint job that covers up many things that you need to know,It is a 1972 has dif lock, muffler not right and we haven't even started on main items.Appears straight and if depending what you want the price isn't far off but havent even got to engine, brakes, clutch, PTO that can make a big difference. I would take it to JD service center and have it inspected which costs around $3/400 which will include dyno and they will write every little thing it needs as they like to sell parts and you will know what it actually is.

It has a Year A Round cab which is basically scrap but plus is the factory JD cab doesn't have rock shaft covers at least $400 and deck is not part of cab saves another $250 and that cab is easy to take off.I personally only buy nice ones but salvage value is around $4K.Shift linkage gets loose around 10K hours so tach may have just turned over. You could use it like it is and if nothing is wrong would be cheap 125H.P. tractor.

I see it has 540/1000 PTO I have only seen one with out although it was an option. The clutch free travel adjustment usually you will see all the top part of slot when new and when it gets to the top not much left although I have seen them run quite a while with not much free travel. When people paint the gas cap, chrome, axles etc. it bothers me. The tires were put on later or they would have been painted too. A plus is the side screens look good and frame holes don't appear to be worn from a loader, hood looks to not be messed up in front so it might not have looked as bad before paint .A good paint job will start around $2500 and tractor would look nice but I would rather have a solid tractor that I know is good.My neighbor thought a 72 original paint 4020 I had was a little too high so bought a beautiful painted one with new tires and seat and then spent $10K for repairs. If you go back a ways on photo ads and punch in 4320 some of mine might show up.

. For the right price it could be a place to start . However the owners were crude sloppy hacks and anything they have touched will be a slob job.

I told him it would be better unpainted, what you see is what you get. No doors and no glass. What about that clutch adjustment slot, where it is now is best or at the top best? It leaks a small amount around that spring you see through the inspection cover though nothing was on the cover when i removed it. I understand why they are easier to work on than the 2555 I havent finished with yet. I'm like my father, not a quitter, although I know when to walk away from some things. I will have someone else look at it.

I did Dave Thank you.I called number and when they said Custer Park I said I have dealt with John Love a few times and it was his son so being John is 86 or so I am going to talk to him tomorrow. Not good pictures but John will tell me the truth and that's something these days.Probably buy them both as originals are getting hard to find.We are still in field been a tough year but crop is good just need trade instead of aid. I don't know if you happen to see the 4320s I just sold.Bought another farm so toys have to go until I get some new ones.
