Unloaded a 219 diesel bought from salvage yard this pm, something didn't look right. Told yard we needed a 219 diesel for a 1530 (3cyl) this one has 4cyl! Will be interesting to see how this deal turns out.

1520s may have used a 165 CID 3 cylinder engine. Isn't a 219 CID engine the 4 cylinder diesel that was used in 2030 tractors and 3300 combines?

So I'm guessing you thought 219s were three cylinder engines? Well it ain't so, atleast not the ones I've been around. We have a 219 in our JD 2280 swather.

Ditto 1520's utilized a 164.9 cid(2.7L) engine

You got just what you asked for as all 202-219-239-276 engines are four cylinders. The three cylinder engines are much harder to find as they were not used in as many industrial applications. Get a 2020-2030 hood and the 219 will bolt right in your tractor. You would also need a longer steering rod and some hyd lines as well as longer throttle rod. Tom

I&T manuals tend to cover several different models that are part of the same series or family so I'm guessing you just misread it. My manual I used for overhauling my Case 500 also covered the 600 and 900. If you were close by I would take it off your hands because we have a 3300 combine that I would like to swap out the gas for a diesel.

The 173 and it’s smaller sisters are what bolts in. Is the old engine born rebuildable ?

I think you meant to type 179(2.9L) not 173

Don't know what I was thinking regarding the 179 cubic inch/2.9L three cylinder.
We did have a 173" Chev in Mrs B&D's first SUV. We souped it up with a programmer and a set of headers. Hills that it could not maintain speed in 4th gear could afterwards be climbed in 5th with a loss of only 1-2 mph.

Never rely on the i&t manual for anything important . You could have called the dealer or went to jd parts and gotten the right information

In my defense I&T list eng as 3cly, 4.02 bore and 219cu, so manual is wrong. Looks like I'm out shipping and my winning streak is ended w/42yrs wrenching and no mistakes. LOL

I have the i&t manual I use for reference but I never trust it for anything that?s important like you found out they may or may not have the right info I?ve caught it several times myself so anything important I cross reference with the Deere manual .

I wouldn?t feel to bad if you went 42 years and that?s your first mistake especially using i&t manuals 😂😂
