Cracked manifolds on old 2 cylinder John Deeres

Is this a common problem on them? I would like to trade for a
50 or 520 but a few ads that I looked at mentioned a cracked
manifold. How hard and how much is a replacement. If crack
is not to bad could it still be used without damaging anything
else.

Most of them will be cracked unless they have been replaced. Most common to crack in the heat exchanger area. A lot of them won't give any trouble though as they get rusted shut inside. Many of them blow the gasket out on the RH side where they meet the cyl. head. This can be a bigger problem to fix.

Well on a 60+ year old tractor, cracks happen.. It is Common but there are good quality parts available.
Take your time do it right it might last another 60 years....

Forgot to mention, if your going to spend the Dollars for a tractor & your thinking about a 50 or a 520?
Put the dollars toward a 520/530 you'll be much happier than a model 50. The 50 was a great improvement over
the Model B, but in my book the 520/530 are light years ahead of the 50.

Busted manifolds are about as normal as work out pulley brakes, missing PTO safety shields , missing fenders, broken/missing/wrong gauges , miss matched tires and dented grill screens .
Just part of the hobby.
I would lean towards the 520 as well.

i replaced them on a 520 a couple years ago.You could still get them from Deere but the price was around a thousand dollars at the time.I put aftermarket ones on for three hundred.

I would be happy with a 50 but only with live pto. I only have a
rotary cutter and tiller. But I like the sound of the old two
poppers or I would keep my 3 cyl 830. Thanks for the info
every one

(quoted from post at 20:07:43 09/27/18) What items from a 520 or 530 are "light years ahead of the 50"?

I think I wouldn't classify it as qualifying as "light yrs ahead" but factory 3 pt hitch with center link attaching bracket & draft control on 520/530 not available on 50. IIRC live pto was an option on all mentioned models. I personally prefer the slant steering wheel on the 30 series.

better 3 point hitch, includes draft control

better engine balance & more power.

better power steering system.
on later / black dash series , better clutch system.

Once you've driven a good 520/530, you won't be going back to a 50.
Nothing wrong with a Model 50.
