For 2 days I have been trying to get 2/4 points to fire. Have bought new coils, poi ts, and condensor ...2 sets. I have switched items from side to side with the same result. The engine will run on 1 and 3. Sometimes it will speed up like its trying to fire on 2/4. Do I have to buy a rebuilt distribitor. Thanks...Darald

(quoted from post at 22:45:57 09/24/18) No I haven't, would that keep the ignition from working?
Ignition could be 100% functional but if there is a mechanical problem on 1 or 3, power will be limited . Do the plug wire ends match the type of coil being used . There are prong and spring tab coil types

If you have new coils, points and condensers and still have no spark...check the plug wires. B & D is correct about having the right coils with the right coils. The cheaper foreign coils have a barbed post that plug wires push into. The American made coils have a spring clip inside and a bayonet terminal on the plug wires that snap together. Leave #2 and #4 spark plugs in, disconnect #2 plug wire and connect it to a new plug that is grounded to the tractor frame. Crank pony motor and you should have a hot spark. No spark means the problem is somewhere in the coil box. Low compression would not impact whether or not you have spark here, but if you have spark but the cylinders don't fire...check the compression. Should be about 120 psi. Might have been cheaper and less stressful to buy a entire rebuilt coil box. Been there, done that!

There is also a problem with the resistance in the new coils. Some times you have to bypass the resistor at the ignition switch to get more voltage to the coils. I had this situation on my 720 and it fixed the problem.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have been trying to contact Rich regarding steering valve parts.
Rich could you contact me please?
