John Deere MT points

I’m getting this tractor going after sitting in a barn for quite awhile and I can’t get the points to spark when’s they open in close if I stick a screwdriver between them they will spark then but not with just turning the motor over. I tried cleaning the points but that didn’t seem to make a difference. Any ideas I appreciate it thank you!

It can be hard to see a spark when spinning the engine over because they open and close pretty fast. But if you pull the coil wire out of the distributor cap and hold it about a 1/4 inch form the block you should see a good blue/white spark there if the points are working as they should be

I just fought that same thing on a standby generator here I tried to get going after sitting a few years. I had to really clean the points with 400 grit paper and then run white note book paper through until clean. Then I got spark when cranking. I should of just put new points in though.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]Mark-IA[/b:654c4848f0]'s statement to "[i:654c4848f0]check the point gap.[/i:654c4848f0]"

You might consider using an OEM In-Line Ignition Spark Tester.

Take a look at the photos below.

Note that one end is attached to a spark plug wire and the other end is attached to a spark plug.

If "[i:654c4848f0]turning the motor over[/i:654c4848f0]" causes the light to flash, then the points are opening and closing.

Hope this helps.

John

Thanks guys! I ended up resetting the gap and that seemed to take care of it thanks again!
