has anyone rebuilt the fan assembly of a john deere 40
deere does not have the fan shaft bearing available any longer
to rebuild you have to grind off the 4 rivits to remove the fan blade
even the rivits are no longer available
i know the M fan bearing assembly is available from stiener but to my knowledge no
40/320/330 complete assembly
i would like to know if anyone has a cross reference number for the bearing
Hate to go at this assembly and chop it apart if non repairable,
im going to try to find a junk one to chop apart that im not out much.
being 1955 i imagine a used one in the wrecking yard will be no better that the one i got.
any help would be appreciated.

I have never repaired one, but would be VERY surprised if you could not find a replacement for the bearing, which looks to be a "waterpump" or "marker" style bearing with an integral shaft.

Kellog Automotve, in AZ, is a well-known supplier of waterpump parts and bearings, they are the first place I'd try once I got it pressed apart and the bearing measured.

Here ya go

Been many years since I rebuilt my 40W but if Deere doesn't list a part number then I was thinking I must of used a Deere bearing from a lawn mower idler which is also much like a planter press wheel bearing.

Ok; I went and got my 40 parts book as I was sure I hand written a note in it for this. Item # 12 bearing with no number listed normally in parts book I used a M74707 per my note. This is a JD part number for a lawn mower bearing. Now it has been around 26 years I did mine ! so I'm not sure how I did it, but the fan did not have to be unriveted. Mine still looks original rivets. I could not reach the front of it but the book shows a plug in the center to plug a hole. I likely used this hole to drive or press the bearing from the fan hub. Last lawn mower pulley I did this spring I used an air hammer to pop it right out. Just measure everything and mark it down so you can go back to same locations. Don't press or clamp on V pulley edges. Support on the center hub area if pressing. There is a threaded adapter on the back that will need bearing shaft to be pressed out of it so it can be reused.

well that is what is so great about this web site
thanks mike for the part number. it is still available and the local dealer has 3 in stock.
i will get one tomorrow.
today i disassembled an old fan assembly that was rusted out and scrap.
i drilled the rivets apart and removed the fan.
got the rest of it in the press and carefully pressed it apart.
it involved 2 set ups in the press.
i was just able to go into jdparts and check to see if the part number from mike for the bearing is still available
and it is
will get it picked up tomorrow and be able to repair the good fan hub.
went to my old drawer of rivets and picked out 4 that are just right.
will have this fan assembly back together in no time.
thanks alot for all the informative help.
