Looking at s 72 model that has around 5k hrson it. From what im being told its a two owner tractor and has primarily been used for hay work and bushhogging. Tractor does have a loader, also rollbar with canopy. Its original and unrestored and ovrall seems fo be in good shape. Guy wants 12k for it. Whats yalls thoughts on these tractors, anything to look for?

Last one I heard of sell in my area of Ohio brought $ 13,000 and no loader. Many years before that one brought $ 15,000

Couple details missing that might help - powershift or syncho? Tires and condition? Loader? Simply going off your post, if you paid $12K for it, that would be good deal for you, maybe a very good deal, especially if was a decent JD loader.
Ok, now this is 46 year old tractor. Heres the thing- can you verify the "two-owner and hay work and brushogging" line? This is the tractor equivalent of "owned by a
little old lady that only drove it to church on Sundays and the corner grocery store". Maaybe since 2010 it was used for hay wagons and brushogging, but what about the
preceding 35 years, could have had a tough life. If you are not familar with these, see if you can find someone who is to look at it with you. If they say its in good
shape, it will be more than worth the $100 or whatever it is that you pay him to look at it.

Roll bar w/nice canopy $1200 Loader if JD 148 and not broke $2500 So that makes a 5000 hour 72 4020D $9300 which is reasonable but there are many variables.I bought one for an FFA project that had $16K worth of receipts but was original and axles had been shortened and it was far from a show tractor and it cost $8K through the estate. The FFA kid got new Titan tires free and put on new fender tops and seat and a near perfect paint job and sold it for $14K. I don't make a profit on those so it was a good deal.

About 20 years ago friend and I went to farm auction. He was looking for a loader tractor for his "ranchette". There was a late model 4020 with a good loader, probably a synchro tranny. Good tires and didn't look abused. I was thinking he may have to pay up to $10K. He paid about $11k which I thought was too much. Since then I realize it was as good buy as the tractor is probably still worth nearly what he paid. Check to see that PTO stops like it should when it is disengaged. If synchro, look for clutch pedal travel. Look for oil leaks from the front end (could be pump leading). Most loader tractors have some dings and dents just from loader work, but that shouldn't reflect mechanical condition.

Thanks for the input, we actually looked at the
tractor last year but just couldnt swing it so we
walked away. On a whim called the guy the other
day and he still has it. If my memory is correct its a
jd 148 loader and its the sychro tranny. He does
have a bucket, and spear with the loader. We are
going to look at it again in the morning. My dad
grew up on one on the dairy and knows a little more
about them than me but we both are no experts.
Also we are located in the southeast and you dont
seem to see as many around here as it appears you
do in other locations.

Even better! I should proof read my comments but they are worth what they cost. The 72s bring more than any of the 4020s I suppose as that is the last year.Serial numbers over 270000 also have peoples attention,of course P.S. and HFWA and 3 scvs all help. But the main thing is proven hours and condition.

I agree with Shaler 100%. In '72 this was probably the big dog on someones farm. They didn't buy 4020,s back then to do hay. That being said...do as he said and take an expert or as close as you can get to one, with you, even if you have to pay him. He will save you way more than his cost.

estate auction in nw ohio yesterday. 1969 4020, console model but not as desireable as the '72. synchro, dual hydraulics, medium rubber with pretty serius rust onwheels around the stems of clearly loaded tires. it showed 6200 hours, very doubtful, but who knows.

that rascal brought $14.5k. i get it, 2 guys wanting it is the secret, but im here to tell you, a diesel 4020 is a $20k tractor in 3 years.

Do you really think their prices will still go up in the future as the tractors pass 50 years old and the guys collecting them start downsizing? I have my doubts.
