48 B rockshaft cylinder packing job

I would like to fix the hydraulics on my B this winter. The 45 loader has always sagged a bit (though it will stay up better with a load on it), but I noticed the rockshaft really sags quick with my 2 row front mount cultivator. It got the job done but was a bit of a pain driving down the road. From looking at the parts book it appears I need B1151r, b1145r, b2800r, b2799r, b3346r, and the powrtrol housing gasket. Am I forgetting anything and is there anything else I should check for when I have it apart? Thanks,

Pete

Pete,

There are 2 places where hyd oil can leak and cause rockshaft problems. One is the cylinder gasket B1151R.
The other is the piston cup or packing, B1145R or B2799R and B2800R. The easiest thing to do would be to
pull just the Powr-trol valve box, remove the piston and see which type of piston you have and replace the
leather cup or the packing and paper washer. If this doesn't fix the problem then you can remove the
rockshaft housing and replace the cylinder gasket B1151R.

If the piston is the problem it's an easy and inexpensive fix. If it's the cylinder gasket it's a bigger
and more expensive fix. The B3346R gasket is expensive.

You can also get internal laekage at the o-rings that seal the hyd.tip plug stems inside the casting.

Thanks for the advice Pete. I know the last time I checked the transmission level oil started coming out the fill plug so I figure she's probably picking up oil from the hydraulic reservoir. Should I get the powrtrol gasket from Deere or make it myself. I used a Deere gasket to do my 60 and thought it seemed paper thin. Has anyone tried doubling the gasket up? Thanks,

Pete

When hyd oil blows by the piston it goes back to the hyd oil reservoir. The 2 places hyd oil can leak into
the trans/rear axle are the cylinder gasket and the flat rubber "washers" on the pto shaft where it passes
through the hyd oil reservoir portion of the rockshaft housing. The "washers" are key 52 on page 102 of
the pc. Part # for them is A2436R and you need 2 of them.

To replace either the gasket or the "washers" you have to remove the rockshaft housing.

You can make the powertrol gasket out of paper by using a small ball-pein hammer. Hold the paper in place
against the rockshaft housing, then tap and cut out one hole. Start a bolt in the hole and then tap and
cut another hole and put a bolt in. Keep doing this until you have all the holes cut then cut the outside
edge with the hammer.

The large gasket is about $40 fron Deere. You could also make it the same way.
