JD 720 Pony motor.

Hi all a new to me JD 720 Diesel pony motor was not idling well needed lots of choke checked idle jet and it runs great with jet only being open a 1/4 turn or less?is this normal

I would first ck the flow of gas going to the carb

Thanks for the quick reply I have been a member here for a lot of years but had to re register today as I could not remember any passwords or anything but this seems to be working fine.
Now hi idle runs great and turns the big engine over easily I just thought it strange it ran so much better when I almost had the idle screw almost shut off. I did buy new diaphragms for the carb so I will check things out.
