Early 4020 synchro still hard to shift

I just replaced everything on the top transmission shaft. I?ve been driving it around gently to be sure everything works. No problems until today. Put the mower on today and used it for a couple hours. Before I got done, it was just as hard to shift from 3rd to reverse and reverse to 3rd as it was before. When I?m not using the pto and running lower rpms it shifts fine. I?m wondering if the clutch is dragging when it gets warmed up and not letting the top shaft stop turning so it drops into gear easily. The adjustment bolt for the clutch is at the bottom of the slot. Neither clutch has been slipping under load. That?s a lot of money spent to still have it grinding. Thanks for any advise.
 
It certainly sound like the clutch is dragging a bit.

One the other hand, it certainly doesn't hurt to throttle back a bit while shifting, IMHO.
 
Had a 3020 once the clutch disk warped and acted like that. Middle of winter hauling manure and no hard pulling. Go figure.
 
Your clutch disc is worn out. The groves on the disc get worn down and when hot the disc will vacuum and stick to the flywheel and not release. Just did a late 3020 that the owner sold me because he was sure it was trans. problems. I told him it was a clutch but he was sure it was bad trans and did not want to spend any money on it.It was a real sharp 72 model as well. My 4010 had the same problem 30 years ago would work fine when cold but get worse when warm. You can buy the complete presure plate assemblies on Ebay for close to my aftermarket cost. AG Parts has a new button clutch that has different thickness buttons on each side so it engages very smooth. I have used several and like them. Tom
 
Our 4020 clutch was sticking making shifting hard. Even at low speeds. I think it was from warped disks. When we replaced the clutch we resurfaced the plates as they were out. Works good now.
