1950 John Deere B

I have my "new to me" head ready to back in my 1950 B. When I picked up gaskets the mechanic told me he uses aviation gasket sealant on the paper gaskets, and he leaves the metal ones dry. He said some people use copper coat on the metal ones, but he does not. What is aviation gasket sealant? and where do I get it? Does anyone have any other suggestions or tips for putting this back together? Thanks!!

Permatex Aviation Gasket Sealer is a brush-on liquid gasket sealer. You should be able to get it or an equal at any parts store.

I used copper coat on my 37B head gasket 10-years ago and have has no leaks or problems following my rebuild and head re torque post breaki-in.

I use indian head sealer on one side of paper gaskets to stick them, it is a lot like the aviation sealer.

Here's my take on the head. Get it as clean as possible, don't use any sealer but be sure to torque the head in the correct pattern. Leave it set for a while maybe over night then re-torque it again and if possible run the tractor get it warm and then re-torgue again. I think the torqueing is more important than any other consideration. Also I always liked the indian head sealer but john deere has a similar sealer....I never used any of the silicoin. Here again if you want to torque those bolts not that there is any specifications this is another consideration for proper installation. Improper torqueing of equipment has done more damage than knowledged.

Manual states to soak gasket in oil 5 seconds , then drain 1 minute and smooth side towards head and use lead washers under nuts . tighten from center outward 125 ft-lb .

I think this is open for debate because the liquid will disperse and lessen the torque....now having said that if you come back a day or two later and retorque you might be fine....not a fan of lubricant on non moving parts....
