Replacing a clutch on a 430 U

We have a 1960 430u with a reverser. When we ordered a service manual from John Deere we received a 420 series manual. What advice can you give us on splitting the 430 and replacing the clutch?

There are no 30 series manuals. The only difference in the 30 series tractors is sheet metal and cosmetic features. Drive trains and related items are the same between 20 and 30 series.

You should have manual John Deere SM 2019. The 430 and 435 tractors are considered part of the 420 tractor family. So info in that manual will be the same for the 430. It has info on removing the clutch, by stripping the front end then the engine.

With proper support you can split it at the back of the engine by disconnecting any wires, lines, linkages that span that area. We normally block under the engine to keep the front end level then wedge at both sides of the axle, on a wide front axle, to keep the engine section from tipping sideways at the axle pivot. We have a rolling dolly, with room enough for blocking and a jack on it, we use to block under the transmission. Once the bolts around the bell housing are removed the rear section can be rolled away from the front to expose the clutch.

Be careful and take time to be sure the sections are stable as you proceed. It can be real bad if you blocking fails, personal injuries first and foremost.

Also if the manual calls for adjusting the pressure plate fingers when you install the new clutch; do it to get the best operation and life from the clutch. Most often the pressure plates on these tractors are not like car pressure plates where you just install and go.

while it is apart, check that the hollow tube that throw out bearing rides on has not moved foreward. I had that issue on my 430, it was loose in rear housing and I had to take tractor apart again after fixing clutch.

when going back together some "line up" bolts, regular golts with head cut off, screwed into rear part of tractor really help. I use 2, one on each side.
