John Deere 830 hydraulic issue

Hi all! I'm new to the forum and my first post is going to be question. I bought a John Deere 830 utility (1975) about a year and half ago and I've slowly been making repairs to make it usable. It was pouring hydraulic fluid from
the steering column (power steering) which I have fixed. I have changed the hydraulic oil, filter and sump screen and I'm having issues with the 3pt hitch. The hitch movement is very erratic and the hitch will "bleed" down and
then raise back up to the set position and the cycle repeats. It also seems as if a valve may be sticking when raising or lowering the 3pt. When the arms stop moving there is still a strain on the hydraulic system and then you
can feel it release. Where do I start? dump valve? pressure relief?

Ben,
I have both but I haven't been able to resolve the issue. There is much more experience in diagnosing and trouble shooting here than is printed in the service manual

Thanks,
Darin

I think you need to go through the adjustments for the rock shaft as shown in the service manual. That would certainly be a good first step.

3 pt hitch hiccuping(raising/lowering) while control handle is stationary is normally faulty rockshaft piston seal or possibly control valve linkage set too tight to control valves which would require adjusting screw(key 9). As other posters have stated it's possible 3 pt L/D linkage needs adjusting as outlined in a JD 830 utility tractor tech manual.

Ok. Thanks for the replies. I have done the following per service manual.

1. Adjusted "rate of drop" valve as described
2. Load Control Adjustment was at 3 5/8" spec is 3.62
3. Rockshaft Control Lever Neutral Range Adjustment was to the high side of the spec. This was difficult to measure accurately due to erratic movement of the lift arms.
4. The next step was "Adjusting Rockshaft Control Lever". I was unable to make this adjustment. Movement was to erratic and when I loosened the nut the arms would lift.

During this time the engine was running at 2000 rpm (except for rate of drop adjustment). When I got done I idled the tractor down and was going to move it and now it doesn't want to turn to the left. I just completed resealing the steering tower and all was fine before attempting the Rockshaft adjustments. I thought maybe the hydraulic fluid may have overheated but when I checked the tower, pressure relief housing, dump valve housing, lines, etc.... I was get 124 degrees +/- with my raytech gun.

I seem to be going backwards......

I removed the plug to a make a change to the Neutral Range Adjustment and noticed hydraulic fluid would spray out when I lowered the 3pt. Is this normal?

That's difficult to answer as I can't remember that ever happening on tractors I repaired. Oil that you're seeing could be coming from 3 pt piston cylinder area.
