The 1010's were first introduced with the shift on the dash. Seemed like a good idea. Due to shift linkage issues, (I believe was the problem,) they later went back to the shift on the trans top as it was with a 430 or 435 2 cylinders. which had worked well for years.

The 1010 and 2010 where 2 if the worse tractor JD ever built and parts can be hard to find and cost an arm and leg. I'd run not walk away from it. Yes when they run they are ok but if you need to repair them parts are hard to find and cost a lot

The entire chassis of the 2010 was designed azz backwards . The diesel just made the tractor worse .
A gasser 1010 can be tamed and made usable.

James,

I have seen a couple 1010's as you describe, not many though. There are a few good 1010's around and mine is one of them.

(quoted from post at 21:33:09 08/04/18) Looking at a JD 1010 with 5 speed transmission and the gearshift is on the dash.Is this a rare tractor?

If it is a gas tractor then it s a good tractor for being 50+ years old. If its a diesel then run.

The 1010 are not as bad as a few people make them out to be. it basically has a 430 rear end with a 4 cylinder engine up front. I have two early 1010's with the shifter on the dash. The one shifts perfectly and the other has a hard time getting into 1st / 5th gear when setting still, but if the wheels are moving it shifts fine. I will figure out the issue and resolve it this winter. With the shifter on the dash it does make it easier to mount / dismount.

The same people that put down the 1010 will brag up a 430. Well, I also have a 430 and I will use the 1010 any day of the week before I use the 430. I do not like the shifter in between my legs and its a royal pain to work on the front of the engine. The power steering pump, hydraulic pump, radiator... There is just no room. I would deal with the steering shaft that goes through the gas tank on a 1010 before the front end of a 430.

As for the 2010, I have one of the last ones built. It has been a very good tractor and has been on the farm since 1970. I rebuilt the transmission about 15 years ago, I had no issues getting parts from Deere. Last winter I finally rebuilt the engine. This is the third engine that's been in it. Once again, I had no issues getting parts from Deere or Reliance, both had everything readily available.

The parts for these 50 year old tractors are no more expensive than the next 50 years old tractor and just like anything else there are parts that are obsolete on the 1010 / 2010, then again there are parts that are obsolete on a 4020 too.

In the end its a 50 year old tractor, how it has been maintained for the first 50 years of its life will determine if its a good one or a bad one. No different than any other 50 year old tractor regardless of color.
