John Deere 70 PTO clutch

Hi all.

The pto on my 70 does not brake unless i push down on the lever. I tried tightening the clutch, counter-clockwise, which I realized was the wrong way. I went the other way, and the lever still pull up hard, like it's engaging, but it won't stay up in the engaged position. Did I go too far the other way? I have it where it was before now. I'm just confused on how to get it adjusted right. It runs good when engaged, but when disengaged, the shaft still rotates.

Had the same problem with "1011" one of our 53 Model 70s.

The PTO housing was over-filling with the heavier 140W gear oil from the transmission.

Not sure/don't remember what the mechanic did to fix the problem, but the PTO shaft no longer rotates when disengaged.

Sorry, not much help.

The brake on those older designs was full on with spring loaded pressure when clutch disengaged.
Good chance the brake facings and or pressure springs need replacing too.
