Battery problems

As it left the factory, it would have had two 6-Volt batteries connected in SERIES, hooked up to the tractor (+) ground.

On those 12 Volt tractors I've not used two sixes in series for yearsssssssssssssss. I always used one big honkin high CCA 12 volt battery with appropriate modified hold downs.

Unless you just want to stay as it was when new I would instead buy one big high CCA 12 volt battery and save your self a lot of $$ and trouble. 2 6 volt batteries will cost you at least half again what one 12 volt battery will and the 12 volt battery is likely to last a lot longer also

To maintain as it came from the factory, connect + of battery 1 to chassis (battery box), then a second cable from - of battery 1 to + of battery 2, then the long cable from - of battery 2 to the starter switch. Many battery box connections were not long-term reliable and that cable from + of battery 1 has been modified to connect to a heavy casting bolt near the rockshaft area. Cables mentioned are the heavy gauge type.
