4010 rebuild and radiator

Read some of the archives and still wondering if replacing the radiator in 4010 should one go to the 4020 radiator as may have 4 cores instead of 3 and 10 fins per inch is there any other alterations that need to be accounted for, with this switch as I am thinking better cooling efficiency? When replacing cam followers in a in frame overhaul you only need one magnet to pull the cam followers not six as someone posted in an earlier much earlier post as I cannot follow that logic?

Go with the 4020 radiator as the extra never hurts and I am not sure that a 4010 would still be available as most companies try to make them interchange as much as possible. The reason you only need one magnet is that with the head off you can pull one follower at a time. If you are not replacing the cam there is no reason to replace the followers. I would check them for wear before just assuming they need replaced. I always use new ones when replacing the cam shaft. Tom

Can't help you on the radiator, are you looking at old information, or have you actually checked what exactly suppliers currently have available? THAT factor MAY dictate your choice.

As to the "tappets" some engines use tappets/lifters with a relatively small shank and a large "head" that rides on the cam that cannot be removed "from the top" and you need as many magnets as there are lifters to hold them up and out of the way for cam removal with the engine upright/"in-frame".

Your 4010 has "bucket-style" lifters that can be removed one at a time "from the top" with a magnet and set aside (in order, if planning to re-use).

Thanks guys in research they do have both available thus the question on radiator. Thought that would be the answer just a little wider and read where even if bought through jd may have to grind the hood to fit? The cam will be replaced as oil pump gear has sheared the teeth off so will replace the cam followers also. Rod Bearings were in pretty good shape and looked like they were replaced around 1972 in a 63 tractor and plastiguage said .015 so replaced with standard bearings, the main bearings were original to tractor and were down to the copper on the 1st bearing but they sent wrong bearings so waiting to replace but they will be standard also quite a statement for a 55 year old tractor I was pleasantly surprised. Next will be the oil pump as gear had some wear but john deere sent wron shaft and gear as mine has a woodruff key and the one they sent did not so they are going to try to pull from different warehouse to see if can get one with woodruff key. So we wait ... Thanks guys for the information greatly appreciated Michael

You will more than likely need a different radiator support rod on the right side as the 4010 had a several inch long bracket and the 4020's had a short bracket and a longer rod. No big deal just get one from a parts yard. The short ones make pulling the radiator much easier. Tom
