4055 temp gauge jumpy

Temp gauge on 4055 was in middle of green then all of sudden jumped into red and the back down. Was ok for a few minutes then did again. Needle never in red for more than 2 or 3 seconds. One time it jumped back and forth and the settled in middle. Any ideas.

Almost certainly electrical, oil temp wouldn't change that fast.

Look for damaged wires at the sensor, you didn't say what transmission you have, sensor location may vary, may be in transmission pump intake tube on RH side of tractor, or in the "clutch valve" below cab, basically under your left foot when seated.

Could be failing sender, dirty connections in instrument harness, bad ground(s) in the instrument panel area, or even a failing gauge.
