1948 John Deere B flywheel

Hello all,

I am new to the forum and I am currently 90% complete in restoring a 1948 john deere B. Its been a major project and we just got it to fire up! So long story short, the tractor is vibrating pretty bad when it
runs so i assume that the flywheel is on in-correctly. I know that the clutch is weighted as well but i do remember making sure that the v notches on the clutch driver were lined up when we rebuilt the clutch. We did not realize that the flywheel has one deep spline to accommodate a locating screw on the crank for proper balance. I will get home tonight and
check that out which I am hoping to find that we just need to move it one spline and problem solved.

However, here is the problem im trying to get ahead of in case i run into it. I have seen on an old post in this forum that not all flywheels for the B had a deep spline. So just in case my flywheel does not
have this deep spline, how will i know where to set it? Thanks in advance!
 
The late "B" flywheels are the same except for the deeper spline . If you find a newer flywheel you will have to remove the screw, mark the spline on the end of the crankshaft and align the V mark on the new flywheel with your new mark. the torque setting for the flywheel and clutch driver is 150#.
 
I strongly recommend getting the John Deere B service manual SM2004 from Davenport Tractor or else where (best I have seen from Deere) for your B as well as other letter series Deeres. There most certainly are guide marks for both flywheel and clutch. My first rule when working on anything is do no harm. Hopefully you have not already by passed that.
 
The model B flywheels have the deep spline. The model 50 flywheels have no deep spline but have a V marking right where the B's have the deep spline. Both flywheels have same casting number though.
