John Deere 430 Clutch Issue

Washed my 430 off and put it back in the shed. Couple weeks later I started it up to back it out and the clutch doesn't work, just grinds the gears when you try to put it in gear. What in the world happened?

you have forced water into the big bolt holes on the side of the clutch housing.
this allowed the clutch disc to stick to the flywheel.
best thing to do is out in a wide open area start the tractor in first or second gear.
once running try to shake the clutch loose by stepping on the left and right break pedal while holding down the clutch pedal
hopefully the clutch will break loose from the flywheel.
you will know when this happens because the tractor will stop.
another way is to tarp strap the clutch pedal down and have a tractor chained on front and back pulling it each way and maybe this will
shake it loose.
bottom line is you have to get the clutch plate loose from the rusty flywheel manually OR ELSE the tractor will have to be split apart.
sounds like it hasnt been stuck to long so should let go with little effort.
just remember safety first.
then remember, put some SHORT bolts in them holes to prevent this from happening again.
short bolts because if they are to long they will go in and push on the flywheel preventing the MOTOR from starting.

Yep, the bath got it stuck. If you aren't in a hurry just block the pedal down and let mother nature take care of it. Temperature change will pop it loose.

My 420 did the same over the winter. Do I started in gear and got it out in the open. Hooked a chain to a tree and started it again in first gear and just held the clutch in. Took about 30 seconds of spinning the tires and she popped loose
