Hand Start VS Electric Start-2 Cyl.

How much harder do you think a hand start tractor is to sell, than an electric start one is? I think a lot of older collectors don't want to deal with hand starting them, and the younger guys don't want to deal with it, either. Any body care to put a dollar amount on the difference?

All things being equal, less starting application, usually $200.00-400.00. I?m 68 and I still like to ?roll her over? on my 41 JD B.

If the tractor is up to snuff, and good mag and carb, the hand cranker will start every bit as good as electric start without the expense of a battery and or starter/generator repair. My 2 cents worth.

Yes Barts Dad, get another 10 years and then tell about pulling on the flywheel. Only one of my Bs have a petcock and in cold weather they do not start easy. A 2 foot jerk with a chain works a lot better.

I'm with David on this. Depends more on age, nostalgia, and whether someone has taught you the proper way to roll it over and crank it.

Anything will still sell easily if it's priced right. I would guess hand start would sell for 25 to 50 percent less than an equivalent electric start if you need to sell it reasonably fast. The market for most 1930's to mid 1940's tractors is falling fast as older collectors are down sizing, selling off their tractors while younger buyers are interested in 1960's tractors. Some tractors that were saved from the scrap yard thirty years ago may eventually still wind up there. The up side is that someone did enjoy them for those extra thirty years.

This is just my personal opinion but I've never hand started a tractor in my life. At this point I don't think it's something I'll ever need to learn. I can't imagine myself wanting a hand start tractor regardless of price. If by some chance I did I would prefer a JD, but it'd have to be dirt cheap. Like I said that's my opinion. I suppose if I'd grown up with them I might have a different opinion.

I have been thinking about selling my 1941 hand start Model B. At these prices I guess I will just keep her. I love to roll her over and have her come to life. As long as I can still stand along side and move my arms, I will just keep her.

When I was a young lad I enjoyed hand starting old engines and kick starting my motorcycles. These days the energy levels are not there even worse is the stamina. I could never own something I could not hear run once in a while. It's life I still love all the old iron.
