620 clutch/pulley bearing

Baling with 620 and kicker baler, and getting
noise (cross between howl and dog barking)
seeming to come from clutch/pulley area. I am
thinking bearing in pulley. Owner manual says
remove clutch and pulley to grease. Parts manual
shows pulley on first, then bearing into it, then
clutch plates & disks etc. Question is, do I have
to remove pulley to get to bearing, or can
someone give guidance... Thank you... Dan

That's some strange sound you got there! I was checking out a number series tractor and engaging the PTO with the lever on right of seat resulted in a startling howl from in front and below. Throwing the PTO out of gear with the lever on the deck changed it. It was in the bevel gears and the in-out slider way at the bottom of the transmission. I was told that it was a real stinker to repair. Hope it isn't that. . . Does the howl vs bark relate to load on PTO?

The noise is the same even when not using pto. If I just drive tractor down road with no implements noise is same ?.?.?. Dan

pto isolation lever located just just behind the hand clutch pivot . Any difference in howl between the engaged and disengaged ?

The crown and heels wear off the clutch and transmission driven gear and then the gear just rake...making the noise....the teeth are no longer rolling while in contact....howling ringing noise occurs...

Dan,

Sounds like a loose fly wheel to me. Does the sound change when you engage or disengage the clutch? They usually are heard like it is coming through the clutch.

I think that sounds like it could be the problem,
what is the fix ?? (I am an old farmer, not a
mechanic.. is this easily correctable or major
surgery???) Thanks.. Dan

I am not sure... I will have to check it out and let you know....heavy rain with a flash flood watch now, so it will have to wait a bit...Dan

Yes you would be looking at a major mechanic project and would entail considerable expense.

....well crap !!! I have owned this tractor for
fifty years, and maybe we both are finally
wearing out...I guess I will put in ear plugs and
pretend I don't hear the noise ! So far, it still
works fine except the noise.... Dan

I've seen those tractors so loose in the transmission that I couldn't see why they even worked...many of them would self destruct as gear would over ride. The maintenance on these included adjusting the shims and keeping up to date but many of them probably never had the transmission oil changed.....

I try to do my best for this fine old John Deere.
Last year I changed transmission oil, and over
the years I have rebuilt both pto and pulley
clutch twice, but I am at a loss at to what the
shims are that may need adjusting?.?.Thanks.. Dan
