Removing the clamp on rear wheels on JD A

I am trying to reposition my wheels on my 1950 A, but I can not get the clamp off the hub . I removed the three bolts that secure the clamp to the hub and then screwed two of those bolts back into clamp to try to force it off the hub. The bolts are touching the hub and I have tightened them as tight as I can and nothing is moving. I am afraid that if I try to torque them more, that they will break off. Is there anything else I can do to remove that clamp?

chas036,

Every time I read "Hit the head of both bolts with a heavy hammer" I cringe as I envision Buba stepping up with his 20lbs. sledge. If you go that route you will get them off...................in pieces. I use my favorite 2-3 lbs. stubby handle hammer which I have in every tool box that I use to deliver shocking blows to loosen things. Now that being said there is a time to summon your inner Bubba like setting a taper lock flywheel, you need that 20lbs. sledge then. I have had success getting wheels loose by hitting the head of bolts as described earlier just be aware you can break cast parts.

If you have a torch you can heat the clamp ring in one narrow area to expand it some. Don't heat the whole ring. Or you can use a pipe that will fit over the axle shaft and hit the end of flange while the pull bolts are tight.

I have been tightening the bolts y hitting then with a 5 lb hammer and nothing seems to be moving. The only thing I see is my bolt heads flattening out. Will getting grade 8 bolts allow me to torque them without breaking them off?

I think I will try the heating method now

How easy do the bolts thread into the holes ? The threads may need cleaned out with a tap first as many times the threads bind up and you don't get the pushing force needed.

SUCCESS!!!! I applied the heat to small section of the clamp as suggested here, and tightened down the bolts and gave it a few hits, and it came loose. Now my question is how do I get the wheel to move. The hub sits all the way out on the end of axel and I want to move back about half way. Anyone have suggestions what is the best way to do that?

I tool my clamps off my A (left the bolts on the workbench) by using a foot long steel rod through the bolt holes and hitting it with a hammer. Was not very difficult.

Odds are that the hub and axel splines are rusted and that will make it hard to move the hub. I would suggest taking the hub off, (using puller) and cleaning the grooves with a small wire brush and then cleaning the splines on the axel next until the hub moves freely on the axel.

What I have done to move the wheels, jack up one side of the tractor till the tire just clears the ground, then take a 1/4: chain wrap around the axle housing and thru 2 holes on the main hub and then turn the wheel by hand winding the chain up and this will pull the wheel in.
