JD 4240 opinions

A local dealer has a nice looking 4240 power shift in with 4,000 hours. I thought about looking at it later. I would use if for haying, feeding in winter, and lighter chore work. Are they decent starters in the cold. I would plan on plugging it in but when electricity goes out it would be nice to know if it would start better than my 4430. My chore tractor right now is a 2510 open station and this heat is getting bad. I figure its a waste of time because they want $34,500 for it and I can never seem to get them to negotiate on prices. That sounds way to high to me. If anyone wants to see it it's listed on tractor house. I would post a link to it but i'm not good enough with a computer to know how. It will be the highest 4240 listed. Thank you.

4240's are a very good tractor,,$34,500 will buy 2 of them here in Ohio.. you can get one hauled to about any where in central states for $2,000,,do some shopping and get one,, corn belt tractors are normally better...I prefer Quad Range..

I figured that about the price. Ever since they've been buying up every dealership in Ks and Mo they've become impossible to deal with. The tractor is sitting at a dealership only 20 miles from my house and I have to go that way to pick up parts anyway. I just figured I would take a look at it while I'm there. Most likely I'll pick up my parts, look at the tractor and leave without even talking to a salesman. That's just the way they are. They pick an astronomical price then let it sit in the lot, refusing any offers. For the life of me I can't figure out where the keep coming up with the money to buy out other dealers but they seem to.

That's the way it is around here too..take it or leave it,,you have to drive 300 miles to find a different dealer and they will have the same attitude..Private sales is still the best,,use their unit to see if you like the model,, then go look for a good deal...there are several good small trucking company's that will put it in your drive way..Shuman Specialized Transportation Ltd. is one that we use...

I will second that JD 4240 is a really good tractor. I also will agree it seems priced high. You can buy real nice ones in Iowa here for $15-20K

Yes I'd say that's pretty steep for a price. On a side note I love my uncle's 4240. It's got close to 7000 hrs on it and the engine is still untouched as far as I know. The best things I like about it is the power at low rpm as well as the throttle response. The low rpm power is really nice for hauling wagon loads because it's easy to start out. The throttle response is great for when it's under a good load because you can throttle up and go without hesitation. I think the coldest we started it without plugging it in was around 20 F.

IMHO they are good tractor but hard on fuel. Dad had one and we were always at the fuel barrel. For that money I would buy a 4055 or 4255 with the 15 speed powershift

Some times we don't take into considerations the amount of work that we get done per gallon of fuel....a little cheap running tractor burns less per hour,,but don't get as much done in that hour...Just saying...

4240 are good tractors but the 50/55 series are better and start easier The turbo charged engines are more efficient and quieter. The 359T was offered in 4050 along with 466 non turbod. Not a lot of tractors with much lowered hours than 4000 on a 78/82 model.I buy several nice tractors for resale or use and a nice 4455 would be in mid 30s.Nice 4440s which to me more desirable are hard to find much under $20K if hours are 5/6K .Tires weights and options can make $5K difference,I just bought an above average 7K houred 4440 all original w/duals for $16500 on order. You probably know the tach hours on a 40 series will be about 20% less than the digital tach

I?d be buyin? it. Any tractor with green paint is worth double any other color, regardless of model.

Especially a JD. Double the work, half the fuel and half the aggravation evation.
