4020 injector boots leaking

I recently bought a 1966 4020 power shift with pencil injectors. the owner died app 8 years ago and the tractor has been setting in a shed since then. before he died he had the injector pump replaced and new injectors installed. they had the tractor running at the auction and it was leaking fuel at the rubber boots on top of the injectors on 3 cylinders. I ordered new boots even though the ones on the tractor looked new. the injectors still had anti sieze around the bottom them, so the tractor had not been run much. is there any thing I need to do to keep the new rubber boots from leaking when I install them? do I need to coat them with something besides oil, and would it be better off installing hose clamps around the boots instead of the spring clamps. I think the hose clamps would look cheezy. any help would be appreciated.

Jim, I wondered if there was a special
plier. I'm not sure how many sets I've
relaced with a regular plier and a
screwdriver. Got the tips of the clamps in
the big grooves of the plier worked the
clamp up or down with a screwdriver and
swore plenty.

Well I never had much trouble replacing these return boots. I never used oil or anything else to lube them when putting them on. They are not that tight of a fit. New ones are soft and easy to install. Use the spring clamps. The keep tension on the boot as it ages. You will have fewer leaks with the spring clamps compared to screw clamps. Also the age of the boots is the factor not the hours. Rubber goes bad with age.

IF you want to make the job much easier get/use Spring clamp pliers. They make removing and installing the spring clamps much easier.

The one in the picture is Channellock #558. You can find them for around $15. You will gladly pay that after you fight a few of the spring clamps with regular pliers. LOL

I have modified regular pliers with a grinder to do the same job.

I will second JD's comments about the pliers. I replaced the boots a couple of years ago and I expected it would be a typical project where something unforeseen bites me in the backside. Those pliers made it super easy to hold the clamps and position them. It was probably only 15 minutes start to finish.

thanks every one. I will order the pliers, the old spring clips were a pain to get off. I have always wanted to get a pair of those anyway for the few times I have had to remove those type of clamps, always have to fight them.

I made a pair of special pliers just for removing these on the 30 and
4020 and also my grain drills have some of the same style only about
2 inch diameter. I just took a cut off wheel in my die grinder and cut a
slot in the jaws of a pair of slip joint pliers works just like the real thing
and I already had the pliers

Replace them all. My 3020 had one leaking bad a week ago and being in a hurry I only replaced that one. One week later there is another one leaking:( Tom
