John Deere 50 clutch

What would make the tractor move forward
when I pull back hard on the clutch lever?
As soon as I let go of the lever it stops.
Never had one do that before thanks Howard

Check that pulley brake is set correctly. If it's letting you pull the lever back too far, the clutch is trying to go over center from the opposite direction and engage. Hope this helps.

I agree with susandiane. It's dangerous, especially when your loved one is helping you hook up to something. Fixing it should be a priority. Should be just a matter of adjusting the pulley brake a little tighter.

Howard,

I agree with the others as far as they went. Now if you make the necessary pulley brake adjustments per the manual and you still have the problem you described then look deeper at the operating pin #31 of the parts diagram . If you need to replace it you will need the #30 spacing washers to make the correct adjustment. Had the same problem with my 70D. Not too bad a job to replace that pin as long as you do not drop it inside the cover it resides in. BTDT. Dan

I think I read on another of Howard's posts that he has an early serial number 50. (before 5016615) Mine is also an early one, and uses pin #22. They changed to pin #31 at 5029200.

It's a first year 50 early one I plan on fixing it just never experienced it on any of my letter tractors its my second number tractor

Good catch PJH, I remember that now. They must have changed all the two numbered series then as I found out when working on a 1956 70D. At that time I had some difficulty locating an operating pin, can not remember if it was the early version or late. Think I remember reading Weird Deere had to make one for his 80. Skilled parts counter guys from that era are hard to find, Howard hopefully you can still get that pin from Deere if needed.

My feelings are that it's a good chance the hole in the operating collar is worn. That's if you can't take it out with the Pulley
brake adjustments. My Brother in law makes me a New Washer out of good steel & I weld the washer onto the operating collar, dead center
of where the hole was when it was new.. The way I looked at it years ago I wasn't hurting anything & if it didn't work I still needed
to repair the operating collar. If the 50 is a High Houred tractor I would be looking there inside back side of the pulley. I've fixed
quite a few 60 70 tractors this a good thick hard washer.
