Farmer wants to sell me a 720 diesel but need an idea of what is wrong. He said that he parked it into the shed and the next morning started and went to back it out and the tractor wont move at all. He said there was no noise when this happened and has tried every gear. Clutch pulley spins when it is engaged. Any ideas? I don't want to buy it if it is to major of a problem. Tractor is factory wide square front diesel three point and pto.

My first thought would be that the 2 speed section of the transmission that is shifted as you move the shift lever from the left side to the right side of the quadrant or vice-versa has slipped into neutral.

Have you tried to see if will move in both areas?

Sorry I see what you mean, I will try it in low and in High. I don't know why I didn't think of that when I tried to start it.

It will not move to the right side of the quadrant, when I put a wrench on the brake drum, the tractor tries to move, but when you engage the clutch in any gear on the left quadrant then the tractor will not move. The shift lever will not go down far enough to go across to the right quadrant. Is it just a matter of taking off the shift mechanism and putting shifter back into place?

Yes, that's what you need to do, it takes a little figuring out and prying and wiggling to get the rail back where it needs to be.

Unlike most shift rails it has TWO notches or grooves where the lever engages from the left or the right "station", and the gearshift lever has two "balls" on it, one above the other. One ball moves the high-low shift rail and the other does the 'gear" shifts and reverse.

There's a LOT of parts that wear in the shift mechanism, the more it wears the easier it gets for it to pop out of place like it's done.

If you get it working and drive it enough you will get a "feel" of the shifting, and hopefully learn to hold the lever in a way that helps keep it in place shifting between stations.
