JD 8875 no start - park brake light

I have a JD 8875 I'm having trouble getting to start.

In Run mode: turn key - park brake light flashes. Can hear relays clicking behind the seat but nothing else (no turn over or anything).
In Service mode - same as in Run mode except park brake and Stop lights alternate flash. Still no engine turn over or anything else.

Any ideas on what it could be? As far as I can tell there is no park brake sensor, and Service mode should bypass any of the safety provisions if there was.

I am at a loss.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

So what you have is a New Holland LX885 in John Deere paint and a JD engine. The park brake light is just a reminder light. Things you need to do:
In RUN mode. Turn the key on while sitting in the seat with the seat belt buckled. Do the pedals unlock? If so, place the boom pedal in "float" position. Using another machine or crane from the service truck, raise and support the loader on the stop pins. Remove the LH engine side panel. Remove the starter safety cover. Disconnect the starter solenoid energize wire (should be white with a red tracer). Connect you test light to this wire and check to see if the light illuminates when trying to start the machine. If so, your starter is bad. If not, remove the cover on the big relay under the fuse panel on the left side. The relay closest to the side hood, not closest to the engine (that one is the thermostart relay). There are two little terminals on the top of the relay. The terminal on the left with only one wire is starter energize input. See if you have power there while trying to crank. If so, the relay is bad. If you have long skinny arms you can do this with the boom down, but you're gonna need to raise the boom to replace the relay or starter anyway.
Try this first then get back to me. Remember to remove the RH side hood to disconnect the negative battery cable before attempting to replace the starter or relay.

Service truck? I'm just a lowly rancher with broken equipment :(

I will try what you said when I get back out again, which wont be until this evening again. I'm in central Texas and with the heat index it was 115!! yesterday.

So if the starter is good and the issue is the relay, then I should be able to jump the terminals on the starter and it should crank and start if someone is in the seat? That would allow me to get the boom up so I can get access to what I need to work on.

I will run through the Power Circuit again and let you know what I find.
Thanks.

Well, I always use a service truck (I'm a New Holland mechanic :D )...

Yes, you can jump the big terminals at the relay (if the starter is good). Be VERY careful...
If you can get another machine to lift the boom, remember to put a large block under the rear end of the machine to keep the front from raising up.

NH starters are usually the culprit. I don't know what starter is in the Deere colored machines...
It's rare that the relay fails before the starter on the NH's.
However, we always replace both when we replace an original starter (there aren't many left now), or a starter that's several years old. If you replace the relay, you'll have to remove the LH fender. The relay is held on with two 1/4" bolts that you'll have to hold in from the back side of the fuse panel. If the panel is in the same position as the NH. Looks like it is (but it's NH's pictures in JD parts...). It's also NH's part numbers for a lot of the parts with a MG in front...

So it looks like it is the starter. I got it pulled off.

I was actually able to find a new starter at my local O'Reilly's. Do you know of a good website where I can source other parts for this machine? I was going to get a new start relay like you suggested. I'm also in need of a new muffler (current one is pretty rotten with rust with actual holes through it) but haven't been able to find anything online.

I'll get the new starter on and let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

I'm afraid the muffler is a JD thing. The relay may be able to be matched up. The NH part number for the relay is 9601073.

Got the new starter in and it fixed the issue!!

Weirdest thing:
When I went to get the new starter I decided to have them test the original. It would turn over but wasn't turning with any where near enough torque. I decided to crack it open there in the store in case it was something simple (and far less expensive) like the brushes were completely shot. Turns out it was full of oil sludge!! Oil (thick!!) and fine metal shavings like you would expect inside an oil pan from an engine. Never seen anything like that before. When I got back to the machine I felt into the hole that the starter slides into and didn't get any oil at all?!? Other than a leak at the flywheel, I have no idea where the oil could have come from that would then somehow get into the starter. It's a head-scratcher. I will have to keep an eye on fluids I guess to try to determine where it could have come from.

Thanks again for all your help, jd2cylman. I will look into those parts and see if I can order the muffler from a JD dealer.
