J D 1946 A Slant Dash

I have a J.D. Model A,1946, How do i change the oil pump shaft coupling? can it be done from the bottom of the oil pump or , by
taking the governor case apart, any help would be appreciated, Thanks Ron C.

You’ll have to remove the crankcase top cover where the starter is bolted to. Then depending on how things look you can drop just the oil pump gear and put a new coupler on and put it back together. If the oil pump body is gunned up or has issues you’ll have to disconnect the line and drop the whole oil pump out.

The least work and expense to replace the oil pump drive coupling is to remove the crankcase cover on top and remove the oil pump drive cover on the bottom. This will allow you to align the coupling with the cam driven shaft turning the oil pump. You can not replace the coupling without removing the crank case cover.

Get a couple of long bolts to replace 2 in the oil pump cover, that way it will only drop 3" or so. Make sure you drain the oil first. Take the crankcase cover off the top to replace the coupler.

Aren't there a couple of oil lines you have to take loose to be able to drop the oil pump? I have never done it just recalling what others have said.

Thanks you all, i thought it could be done with out taking the oil pump out , i bet that's a real job,
Thanks again Ron C.
