My 1020 starts and runs fine but after about 2 min sputters and dies. It will start back up after 30 seconds but does same thing again. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

It has a new carb. Does anyone know how to test the fuel pump?
I have also been looking for a fuel filter but can't find one.

Just to be sure if it's a fuel or spark problem, monitor spark at a plug with a neon spark tester and note if spark fails as it begins to die, or keeps on as it coasts to a halt.

As far as testing the fuel pump, the conventional way would be to install a "t" in the fuel line at the carb and monitor fuel pressure with a fuel pump tester (or other low pressure gauge), I'd expect to see 5 - 7 psi, then note if the pressure drops before it "dies".

I took the fuel line off before the carb and turned it over. The gas spits out but not continuously. It seems like it is running out of fuel. I have worked on it for about 4 weeks now and can't get it to run when bush hogging. It will sit and idle all day. Any help would be appreciated thanks

I had a problem much like this I had been battling this year. I replaced the fuel pump, took off the fuel filter and rubber hose previous owner cobbed on and put on the metal line from the fuel tank to the pump. I put a new inlet screen at the carb. That made it run better but now I at times have a hard time getting the tractor to shut down as my carb does not have the electric fuel shut off solenoid installed.

"The gas spits out but not continuously."

That's NORMAL with a mechanical fuel pump operated by the engine camshaft. They pump one squirt of fuel every other engine revolution.

Installing and monitoring a fuel pressure gauge as I previously wrote will tell you if fuel supply to the carb is good under load, or not.

Below is a link to a reasonably-priced low pressure tester, as an example, maybe you have a similar one or can borrow one? Just be safe tee'ing into the fuel line at the carb. You may have to stop by an auto parts store for some rubber gas hose and barbs and brass adapter fittings to do this safely, to be able to run it under load with the gauge attached.

Does it have the original lift pump with the glass bowl? There is a screen in there. I would verify fuel supply out
of the tank by removing the line at the bottom of the tank and opening the valve, sometimes the standpipe in the
bottom of the tank accumulates dirt.

the fuel pump looks like a car fuel pump no glass bowl
I will try to get to the line under the tank and check that.

Thanks for your help

If you have a local O'Reilly's auto parts store they rent fuel pump tester gauges. Pressure should be around 5-7PSI. What they do is sell you the gauge then you use it and bring it back and they give you your $$ back

(quoted from post at 14:07:16 07/11/18) I can't find a fuel filter anywhere. Is the fuel filter in the tank?

This is why the parts book should be consulted . Several lost hours would have been saved . The fuel filter is hidden in plain view inside the elbow at the carb inlet .

+1 on that. There is also a screen on the shut-off on the bottom of the tank. Hope this helps.
