JD 720D Electric Start Breather Filter

I am in the process of getting an 720D with an electric start into running condition, and I noticed that on top of the crank case there is tall tube with a huge oil bath air filter on top. Does this tractor suck that much air through the crank case to need a filter like that? Also my 720 with a pony motor had no such breather or filter, so why on the electric start version?

IIRC, big engine breather on 720 pony start was also the pony engine air cleaner, which did double duty.

Virtually the same oil bath air cleaner is used on the 730 E.S. as the crankcase breather.

MEANT to type "720 E.S." of course, 730 E.S. is the same. Also you mention the "huge oil bath air filter" breather. I wouldn't call it "huge", there's really not that much screen in it compared to a typical tractor engine oil bath oil filter, and not much of an oil/dirt cup.
