Bearing Questions

JD 1010 RS Gas here

Checking my bearings w/ plasti guage. My connecting rod bearings all (save one) need replacing, so I'm planning on replacing those. I decided to check my mains while I was under there and am not sure what happened.

The plasti guage seemed to be compressed differently in 2 spots. Right along the middle there was a blackish stain and it was heavily compressed and indicated that the mains were in good shape, but outside of the middle, it wasn't as compressed and indicated the mains were in not so good shape.

Which measurement should I be going by?

Asked my neighbor and he said if I replace one set of bearings I would have to replace all the bearings (including cam bearings) or else I would blow up the motor. Is that true?

Also any tips for replacing bearings (rod and mains if I have to do them) much appreciated.

I learned years ago if the rod bearing need to be replace your better off the pull the crank shaft out have it checked polished or ground. Also yes main bearing at the same time you do rods. Plus have the head rebuilt. Learned the hard way if you rebuild the head but not the bottom of the engine the bottom will fall out sooner or latter same goes the other way around build the bottom and the head will give out

After you have had the crank (and hopefully the rods and "linebore") professionally checked and attended to as needed the next thing is CLEANLINESS and attention to detail!

While you're there replace both rod and mains. The black in the middle is prob a oil channel in the bearing and build up over the years. when you take the bearings out make sure to use very fine Emory cloth to polish it off and make sure you get every bit off

This tractor is definitely a parade tractor, and gets probably less than 5 hours of use per month. Is it absolutely necessary for me to remove the crank and have machine work done, or will new bearings be good enough for what I'm using it for?

You should be going by the outside
measurement, not where the burnt oil is.
For what you are doing replacing the
bearings will be fine. You should polish
the journals with crocus cloth. I buy mine
in two inch rolls from a local industrial
supply house. Sure a total overhaul would
be better but for what you are doing it's
wasting a bunch of money for very little
gain.

You have said it had bad bearings so yes you need to pull the crank out and have it checked and or turned. If you can so much as catch your finger nail as you slide it across an journal then the crank has to be worked on. Does not matter what your going to do with it the engine still spins over just as fast and you sure do not want a rod flying out the side of the block while driving by a lot of people
