5425 Power Loss

Having trouble with tractor losing power. It will slow down to 1000 rpm then blow blue-white smoke then die. Will start back up run good and go about 6-700 ft and do it again. Changed fuel filter-drain fuel tank-no water. Tank got to 1/2 when this started. Changed fuel filter twice no change. Has anyone had this problem? Ran good and just started doing this all at once. Tractor has 1322 hrs. Thanks for your help.

I sucked an earwig into the rigid fuel tube on a 2355N, similar symptoms. I found it when I was removing the lines to replace the fuel lift pump, which was not in need of replacement. Blew the dead bug out, problem solved.

I've been fighting that black gunk in the tank of my 4430 this year, two more plugs of the pre filter today while mowing five acres of hay. But, it is getting better, I think.

Several thing to check.

1) Take the primer pump off the top of the fuel filter. It has a plastic retainer cap that just screws on to hold it. It is just a large rubber flap with a button and spring. I have found hockey puck size chunks of dirt/crud in here. Stuff seems to accumulate in the top of the filter housing under the primer pump. While you there you can easily blow the housing out.

2) Remove the supply line coming from the fuel tank. See if you have good flow. These are just a rubber line. They are known to go bad inside. The rubber flakes off internally and plugs the line. Several service bulletins about this. Buy good quality line to replace it with. Just regular fuel line not some thing your need to go the JD for.

3) Take the line of the bottom of the fuel tank and see if you have good flow there. That barb is not that large. Crap can get into the tank and plug it up. IF you find stuff in there your looking at taking the tank off to clean it. I have a JD 5210 and have had to take the tank off twice in 3000 hours. It was used when I got it and I think the prior owner did not pay attention to making sure the fuel was clean. If you haul fuel in five gallon cans it is easier to get crud in the tanks.

That suction line in bottom of tank may have a lawn mower size screen in that fitting that plugs up and acts just like that the newer ones do have it we been taken them out and let the fuel filter catch the crap like they were meant to do

Problem solved. Fuel suction line was plugged with slime like in tank. Would not flow even when I ran wire into tank. Had to blow air to unplug. Took tank off and cleaned. Lot's of slime looking trash. I run conditioner in fuel but may need to add more often. Thanks everyone.

Put some biocide in it, following label instructions.

I've had good luck with the product at the link below.

Also, treat your supply or storage tank.

Don't get sticker shock, the biocide stuff is EXPENSIVE!

There's other brands to, any bulk fuel supplier likely has some for sale.

Thank you for letting us know what you found wrong. Glad you got it going again. JD 5425 is a nice tractor.
