620 power trol

Have a 57 620 that is leading hydraulic fluid from the expansion plug on the power trol pump. Any suggestions as to how to fix?

If it's in the actual pump, and not the drive, punch a small hole in the plug, and yank it out with an autobody dent puller or a sheet metal screw and nail puller/prybar.

Clean oil out of counterbore with brakekleen, and expand new 1.25" plug in place. (DEERE #A76543)

If it's in the drive, you are looking at the end of a shaft, and you MAY have bigger problems.

don't know if this photo uploaded correctly. It is the plug in the middle. photo is turned on side.

Bob the 1 1/4" plug in the corner of the photo is an expansion plug. The deere part number for it is 30H17.

The little "plug" in the center of the photo is actually the end of the idler shaft. It has an o-ring that seals it. The deere part number for the o-ring is B2762R. The o-ring is not hard to change. After removing the hydraulic pump, you'll find a keeper pin that holds the idler shaft in place. The pin lifts out with a screwdriver, but as you pull the shaft from the housing, there are washers on the shaft - on each side of the gear. Don't let them get away from you.

If that idler shaft is spinning while the engine is running, it means that the idler gear has seized onto the shaft. It is not supposed to spin, and will mess up the governor housing if allowed to continue.

Looking in my shop manual it shows the small plug as being an expansion plug? It does show it at the end of the idler shaft with a bushing. I am confused about the other expansion plug you mention because I cant find that it the manual.

Bob, I'm talking about the end of the 1 inch diameter idler shaft in the center of the photo. If it is seized to the idler gear, you will be able to see the shaft spinning when the engine is running. That idler shaft is actually in the governor housing. Don't forget about those thrust washers if you pull that shaft out. They have a bent tab on them to keep them from rotating, and you can use the tab to help hang onto them.

The 1 1/4 inch expansion plug is actually in the left end of the hydraulic pump. It is labeled #4 in the parts manual on page 70-26.

There is a 1 inch diameter expansion plug at the right end of the idler shaft on page 70-26, but only for orchard tractors without power steering.

Do you have access to the parts manual? It is available on the JD website, or I can scan a page for you if you need it.
