John Deere 60 PTO housing

Any tips or tricks when re-installing the PTO housing back in? Whats the trick to get the clutch discs lined up with the housing? Then to get the clutch fork lined up!! I'm
getting frustrated!

The trick is to either have a spare clutch drum or use the one on the machine you are working on and do the clutch disks before you finish up the front half. If you have the pto clutch standing up in a vise then slide a drum over it to align it all up then snap the collar to tighten it up. This will make installing them a breeze later on.

When it's engaged before installation it is easy to measure the .090 clearance on the brake for proper adjustment.

What Mike says, and the fork is mated carefully as you slip the assembly into the tractor. I like to adjust the clutch while it's still in the vise, and then you're done when it is back together.

Maybe obvious, but in addition to Mike M's post, it helps alot to cut the heads off of a couple correct-diameter mounting bolts that are a few inches longer than the original bolts. Screw them into the rear cover casting and they will make nice guides to slide the PTO assembly back together. After installing some correct length bolts in adjoining holes, remove the guide bolts and insert the rest of the correct length bolts.

I think I quit adjusting them on the bench as it takes alot of pressure to lock one into the proper spec. I just get them enough to hold and finish up adjustment later after all is done.
Been awhile since I did one and I know on one of my first ones while trying to adjust it on the bench to spec. it popped from the vise or whatever I had it held with and fell on the floor and bent up and ruined alot of the brand new facings and plates ! ouch ! only good part was it missed my feet.

A dummy shaft is the easiest way to align the disks, but if you don't have that you can use a straight edge to line up the ears and you can eyeball them centered enough that they will go together.
