730 diesel starter bolt broke

A starter bolt broke from the starter end cap. Parts Catalog says 5/16 X 1.25 length Special. I didn't measure the thread but it looks like fine. It's a 24 volt electric starter.

Anyone else have this happen? Had to take the starter off the tractor to remove the broken off piece of the bolt as it's too tight a place to get a straight drill into and I wouldn't trust an angle drill for that precision drilling.

I expect there are some pretty high stress forces in those bolts especially when rolling the diesel under compression.

Someone broke it by armstrong is all that happened there. And that happened before the paint job. Plain jane bolt doesn't deserve special category either. I would not have bothered to replace it until the starter needed to come out for other needed work. Not a critical function, no high loads here. It's just a standard assembly bolt that ran into a wrong way wrencher with a serious whoa dysfunction. He would have felt it yielding and only then stopped his ninja like attack on it. Righty tighty, lefty loosey is actually taught in military service precisely because the general public that fills the ranks NEEDS to be taught this much.

I agree with "Lee B" 100%.

We've discussed this before, it's a simple low-strength bolt.

SOMEBODY just got a little overenthusiastic about tightening it, at some point, IMHO.

Ben, a replacement bolt from mother DEERE is listed as a 1/4" NF "grade 5".

Torque tables show between 7 and 8 foot pounds as the torque for such a bolt.

Dunno where you can up with "25", but that's likely a bit much! (I'm thinking the last guy to muck with it tried that!)
