Going to look at a 1992 4055 with remanufactured engine with about 100 hrs on it. 15 speed powershift 4wd. Listed at $34500. Anything to specifically look for?

I did a lot of work on one last summer, mostly cab interior, new roof, LED's, and many other TLC items. The most substantive item we, I had some help on this, worked on was the front wheel drive. It leaked badly, especially when there was oil in it, :) We did not have to touch the center input drive area. We replaced all the seals and sealing surfaces at the axle ends. Some of the parts were cheaper to build-up and re-machine at the local machine shop. Some were just as cheap to buy at the JD Dealer new.

Tim S and others can give better input than I but I sure would like to find out what kind of maintenance it had. The 4055 I worked on looked really tough but when it came to engine and tranny it seemed the owner must have did a good job taking it to the local JD dealer for maintenance. The Power Ship was good, engine ran good, oils and filters looked good as I replaced all. Oh, I sure was impressed on how short that fwd could turn.

One more thing, look for leaks in the oil lines in the steering system leading up to the steering wheel. I am told certain lines crack. A 4450 I worked on this winter had one of those lines already replaced. Also, check the operation of the tilt wheel on the steering wheel. Some don't stay in their detent. On the 4450 I worked on this last winter the tilt wheel detents were good but even when in a detent the wheel would tilt up and down when some force was applied. The yoke that mounted the steering wheel shaft to the tilt wheel pivot point was peeling like an orange. I pulled the steering column and welded it up.

Good Luck.
