1940 John Deere H

Am I ok with running my tractor on just gas. I don't switch it over to diesel once I have it started? Is their benefits to running on diesel?

Always just ran gas in my John Deere model"H", and also back in the 1950's and 1960's when it was still used on the farm. I believe it was intended to be run on Kerosene and not Diesel fuel.
The manual says "this John Deere tractor engine is designed to operate on gasoline, distillate, tractor fuel or kerosene". "In all communities where these low-octane fuels are available, they are generally used in John Deere tractors because these tractors will burn them successfully without any detrimental effect to the working parts of the tractor and at a saving in fuel cost".
Never tried kerosene in any John Deere product except the torpedo heater.
"Gasoline tank capacity 7/8 US gallon. Fuel tank capacity 7 1/2 US gallon". I always just put gasoline into the larger tank and never used the smaller tank.

They were never meant to run on diesel. Kerosene was the fuel to use in them. I just run mine on gas and have for many years.

I store my tractors with some kerosene in both tanks and also the carb. So I usually have some kerosene and gas kerosene mix I can burn up. No advantage to it but it does smell nice.

the last time I bought a gallon of kerosene it cost 10.00,don't know why any body would want to use much of that.

We use to dump a bucket of diesel to about 2 buckets of gas in the old D about 3 time a day. It wore out 3 sets of tires before it went to a museum in New York. Only thing that was ever done was a valve job. It pulled 4-14 and a packer and drills. It was delivered to Wing N Dak in 1943 . Hand start and no lights. The model D tractor the next serial no up had electric start and lights went to the neighbor about 3 miles away. We have a 1943 steel wheel A that has never been over three miles from my place. It is all painted up looking pretty [not a dupont paint job, completely rebuilt down to new brake shoes, gauges, gas caps, and radiator] in my barn that cost over 5 grand to do. Have two set of wheel extensions that I have never put on and the original 3 bottom plow and two row cultivator and no 5 mower that was bought for it. The mower is a foot lift, plow is ground lift, and cultivator is hand lift. I remember my son saying we saved a lot of money fixing it up because we did not have to buy a battery or hydraulic oil. It had a old crows nest farmhand on it that I hauled out for junk that I should not have. Also have a 10 foot disc , 10 foot drill, and a 4 section harrow for it along with the operator books.
