2440 hard to restart after engine warms up

I have a 1976 2440 that has been a good tractor for me other than being cold natured in the winter when starting and difficult to restart in the summer after it has run a while. The radiator was replaced a few years ago so it's not getting hot but after I bale for an hour if I turn it off it won't restart. If it sits for 15 minutes it will finally kick over and start after cranking the motor for 3-5 seconds. Any thoughts on the cause of these symptoms. Engine runs without any faults otherwise.
Thanks,
Chris

Hard starting after a hot shut down usually means the injection pump hydraulic head is getting worn internally around the rotor and bore ports. Fuel that should go to a given injector port bleeds internally back to the return side. Gets slightly better when the pump cools a bit. Could also be the beginning wear of the cam ring, shoes and rollers too. Have a Cummins DPA pump in now with a worn cam ring..

While attempting to start engine vigorously turn steering wheel from side to side while engine is turning over. Turning steering wheel relieves hyd pressure allowing starter to spin engine faster.

(quoted from post at 13:17:34 07/01/18) Are you saying engine does not spin, or does not fire?

The engine does turn over (spin) but it won't fire after 3-5 seconds of cranking the starter. This is much different than when the tractor has been sitting overnight as it fires up on the first hit usually. After I have been running the tractor for a while and has come up to normal operating temperature, then if I turn it off or something happens like I choke out the Mower conditioner or brush hog and kill the engine then that is when I experience this difficulty in starting. If I wait for 5-10 minutes then I can usually get the engine to turn over enough that it will fire but it takes much longer and is much more labored than when the engine has cooled off overnight.

It's ironic that it's like the opposite of winter starting. I have to use the block heater on the engine or it won't start when it's below 40 degrees but then when it's been running an warmed up it starts easy. During the summer months especially in high heat it's the exact opposite.

Have you tried starting vigorously moving steering wheel from side to side? If not it might startle you if you did & engine started.

Time for injection pump work. Dad had a 2240 like that and sometimes he would pour cold water on the pump and it would start right up. Cold water is not a good idea on a hot pump because it can lock them up. Dad said he needed the tractor and the pump was bad so he was ok with the risk. Tom
