pressure switch on jd 40

what is the purpose of the pressure switch below the genny on my john deere 40 that is between neg coil and hour meter? and does it matter which terminal to hook which side to? also how can i test to make sure it works?

thanks dave

It was added on. I have one on my M for the alternator. The alternator is out of the cuircit until oil pressure builds up. When I shut down oil pressure drops and it's removed again.

Whatever yours is connected to is what it is removing from the circuit until it spins over enough to build pressure. It is a safety device.

It turns on the hour meter whenever there is oil pressure. The polarity doesn't matter on the pressure switch. It's either open or closed.
