Spray in transmission

I've seen many folks say that a good test for checking transmission is to open the filler cap and check for spraying. I checked mine.....when I look in there, there's no spraying, but I do have a very steady drip on one side. Is this a sign of a problem, or should I see some dripping? This is on a 2640.

Oil movement inside diff housing on JD utility tractor 20-55 series indicates internal hyd leak which can contribute to heating of hyd oil & poor hyd performance. How drip would affect hyd's on your tractor would be determined by amount of oil dripping

There should not be a drip from the top. If it is on the right side then it would more than likely be the rockshaft control valves. If it is in the middle then it is the rockshaft lift piston leaking.

When looking in the access hole at the back of the tractor, the leak is on the far left side from the top. There is no drip or spray in the center or the right, at least that I can see. It is a steady drip from the top, not quite a stream. No spray. Any idea what

Is there a way to fix this without splitting the tractor?
If I only run it for short periods, can I limp it along for a while? What problems would I cause if I don’t fix it right away?

If it is dripping from the left side looking at the back of the tractor then it has to be spraying oil coming form some place else. There is not any pressure oil on the left side.

As for hurting the tractor. A drip would not hurt anything for now. As for what you would need to do to fix it?? The least would be to take the rockshaft cover off. That maybe all you would need to do but you would need more information before you do anything.
