JD 4230 will not start when warm

Why will my JD 4230 start fine when cooled off, but cranks over fine when warm but will not start ? I replaced fuel filter and the lift pump pumps fuel when cranking it over and the fuel tank is full. I also loosen the cover on the injection pump and have fuel there as well. The batteries are over 5 years old and the air filter looks fine.

. Try a de-stroker, holding the “clutch pedal” down and pouring cold water on the injection pump . When was the last time the valve lash was set ?

I would probably think the head is worn in the injector pump, as stated pouring cold water on the pump will close up the tolerances and make it work, but you have to be real careful not to sieze pump that way. I would cool pump off with tractor not running, then crank and test.

I'd suspect a worn injection pump hydraulic head too. When hot a worn head and rotor will bleed off internally the fuel that should go to each injector outlet, and out the return line instead. You MIGHT be lucky and have a leaking delivery valve stop, that can happen too, and I do see that on occasion.

If there is no smoke when cranking, indicating no fuel, this was fairly common. Many times a new delivery valve in injection pump would fix this. If that not it then the wear in pump head would be the next likely cause. I would replace the delivery valve in pump first before concluding head and rotor needed to be replaced. DW

My 4230 would not start with out either even when it was 90 out. I pulled and popped the injectors and they were shot. Put a new set in and starts fine now.

The first Generation 4230 pistons were too low of compression,,the replacement pistons corrected this issue...

David the original JD 4230s started HARD all of the time and in the winter lived on a block heater. Factory compression was too low. Rebuild them and the "new" domed pistons and they started great.
