Removing oil filter head on JD 60

I am having problems with low oil pressure on my 60. It starts out high but after 20 min of running, it levels out at between the 0 and L. I have changed the gauge to an JD gauge, I have put in 40 wt oil, and nothing works. I don't think it is the bearings because I have plastic gaged the rods and they are within spec and I can't feel any play in the mains. From what people have said it very probable a oil pump or a filter head problem.

My question is, what is the easiest way with the least amount of effort and work, to get that filter head off and the oil pump out? As it sits now, there is no way to reach in there and remove the oil lines.

I know that the best way is to remove the head and pull the pistons and remove the block and this will get me good access to everything, but if there is another way with less work that will allow me access, I would do it.

For instance, will removing the hydraulic pump on the governor, and steering wheel and gear shift support, and the gas tank give me access to get in there?

Any suggestions from people that have done this would be greatly appreciated.

Anything you can get out of the way will make it easier. The hood, dash, pump and oil lines would definitely be in my way. Probably the governor housing too. I removed the filter head on my 50, and even with the crankshaft out and the block off, I had to make like a pretzel to reach the fittings. Your 60 is bigger, so you'll have more working room.

On the right hand side of that picture, you can see the machined area where the right main bearing housing fits. If the crankshaft was in, it would take up most of the picture.

Before you go to all that work check the tightness of the nuts on the oil lines in the crankcase if you can. When my 51 A lost oil pressure the pressure line inside the crankcase, that goes up to the governor area had a nut that backed away. The nut was the one on the top end under the governor. Reach down in there and wiggle the lines. You might luck out like I did.
