Picked up a 40u yesterday, my first Dubuque tractor. When in gear driving around it make a lot louder ?wirrring? sound than im used to hearing from my Waterloo tractors, startled me at first. Are these tractors known for being louder or is there some threat I should be looking into?

Check to make sure the transmission case has oil -- usually a heavy gear oil (85-90W) is used. Some whine is/can be normal after years of use and teeth wearing against one another. If the whine only occurs in one or two gears those were the two likely used the most, if it is steady and constant in all gears the bearings may need some help or ring and pinion wear could be the source.

Being I just got it home from auction today I don?t yet have a manual, I wonder if somebody can tell me how to check transmission and final drive oil, also does it get 85-120?

Seams if I go up a light grade it gets a little louder, if I drive down a grade it almost goes away

Note the pipe plug (Key 9).

Take a look at the photo below of the transmission filler plug on "Audie" our Model 40S.

Note the operator's manual recommends SAE 90.

Hope this helps.

It will be quieter with 140wt. Loosen the drain plugs and let the water out first. It would be wise to pull the lower final drive caps and check the bolts.

Note the final drive pan (Key 38) and cap screws (Key 40).

Hope this helps.

28 is a stack of metal shims to set bearing preload. I would put them back just like they are. I wouldn't bother with the pan gasket unless it's leaking bad. Just snug up the bolts.

Our 40U doesn't make, what I'd call, any out of the ordinary drive train noises.

It was, however, operated with an excessively low transmission oil level on one occasion at which point the whine from the gear train was more than enough of an indicator that something was wrong. Topped the oil off, noise / problem gone........but probably left with the premature wear to the internal parts. LOL

(quoted from post at 12:55:48 06/24/18) Picked up a 40u yesterday, my first Dubuque tractor. Bought a 40U at auction back in 1998. Ran well but made a ton of diff noise just like you describe. I believe the ring and pinion was the source. I changed the diff and final drive oil to GL5 85-140 and added a gallon of lucas oil treatment, which helped.
Used the tractor around the place for 10 years with no problems. It always did make more noise than my 420W.
Seems like they always have some water in the trans or diff, which isn't good for the bearings. Make sure you flush the trans with diesel if water comes out. It's hard to get all the goop out in one oil change.
